Penny Bench – David Watson Works
As part of the design for a new courtyard at Teddingtom Memorial Hospital, we wanted to produce a bench in the space which would relate to the hospital itself and provide not only a place to sit, but a talking point and focal feature. Following research on the history of the hospital, it was discovered that the original 1875 hospital charged 1p a day for treatment, from this the artist David Watson created a concept for the penny bench, which is made of old pennies set into black plastic.
The garden is a contemplative intimate space with sensory planting. The pennies have a rich texture and colour that ties in with the other materials in the space. Close up they will provide another sensory experience potentially spark conversation between strangers.
