The site is located overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, just outside of Funchal Madeira. The terrain is characterised by the agricultural terraces drained by a series of channels.   The architecture and landscape for a main new hospital on the island reflects the characer of the landscape. SLD were part of a UK and Portugal-based design team and finalist in an international competition for the scheme.
